Canned Banners helps small businesses break into online display advertising
Self-serve ad creation tool leaves beta, ready to expand online advertising partnerships
SAN FRANCISCO, CA—January 17, 2011—Canned Banners (www.cannedbanners.com) left beta today. The startup, launched in January 2010, offers a fast and easy online display ad creation tool for small and medium businesses (SMBs). Canned Banners aims for its ad creation technology to become an integral part of the online ad buying process for SMBs. The company plans to do this by pursuing new partnerships with ad networks, publishers, and SMB solution providers.

The Canned Banners ad builder transforms display ad design into an easy do-it-yourself process. Users customize banner ad templates by adding photos and text, as well as selecting simple design options such as font and color scheme. The tool allows marketers to quickly create ads without the cost and hassle of working with agencies or designers.

The company’s ad builder is also a means for online ad networks and publishers increase display ad sales to SMBs. By establishing key partnerships in the online ad industry, Canned Banners can improve the ease with which SMB advertisers can buy ad space and launch campaigns. The company currently partners with ad networks AdRoll, Digital Throttle, and ReTargeter.

“The last few years have seen major advances in online display advertising, but small businesses are mostly being left on the sidelines,” said Myles Younger, head of marketing and business development. “First of all, small business owners have few choices when it comes to creating ads—most of the options are some mixture of crappy, complicated, overpriced, or slow. That’s where Canned Banners comes in—we make it simple, fast, and affordable to create great-looking ads. But ad creation isn’t the only barrier for SMBs—a lot of ad inventory is still tied to exchanges and networks that only larger brand advertisers can access, afford, or even comprehend. We want to expand our network of partners and keep improving our technology so that we can help fill in the gaps.”

Canned Banners plans to make significant enhancements to its technology in the coming year. The company is investigating third-party APIs to power new ad creation apps, widgets, and features. The company will also continue to improve its private label solution, launched in September 2010, which allows ad networks and publishers to apply their own branding to the Canned Banners ad builder.
